Source Files for Asset Factory Specifications

If the Asset Factory functionality is activated for your account, you can upload almost any video file to Pulse and we will use it to generate new video assets that work on any device you wish to target. You should try to upload a high-resolution file with no or little compression, as the quality of the generated assets depends on the quality of the file you upload. Use the general recommendation as a pointer on what you should aim for.

If you are uploading each video file manually, the specifications for video files depend on which devices you want to target. Make sure these specifications meet the IAB standards.

General Recommendations for Automated Transcoding

Ooyala recommends that you use one of the configurations described below for your source file. They are the widely accepted formats  and they provide good quality.

Encoding Setting High Definiton (HD) Specification Standard Definition (SD) Specification
Container format MP4 MP4
Video codec H.264 Baseline H.264 Baseline
Audio codec AAC-LC AAC-LC
Minimum bitrate 5000 kbps 2000 kbps
Resolution width 1280 1024
Resolution height 720 576
Video frame rate Constant frame rate, no higher than 25 fps or 30 fps, depending on the region:
  • 29.97 fps, commonly referred to as 30 fps, for NTSC countries
  • 25 fps for PAL countries
  • 23.976 fps, commonly referred to as 24 fps, for film-look content (24p)
Caution: Frame rates higher than 30 fps, or where the frame rate varies across the duration of the video, are likely to cause a failure to playback.

Note: These are recommendations only. Ooyala supports a wide range of source file configurations. See full list below.

Codecs

  • A codec is responsible for compressing and decompressing a file to decrease the size of a video stream, meaning it makes sure the video has suitable quality and still provides a good streaming experience on different internet connections.
  • Video codecs and audio codecs combined build up the bit rate (kilobits per second) figure that is the the streaming transmission speed.
  • Different codecs are supported by different platforms and services. The Ooyala Asset Factory uses the file you upload and generates new files with codecs that are supported by all the devices that you want to target.

Aspect Ratio

  • It's important that you upload files that have a proper aspect ratio, which refers to the width of the video player compared to its height, and reflects the size of the screen playing the video. Screens exist in all sizes so check the size of the video player that will play the ad.
  • If you don’t have access to that information, or intend to play your ad on many different screens, the best approach is to conform to the international standards 4:3 (standard TV format) and 16:9 (wide screen), where 16:9 is the more used one of the two.
  • If the aspect ratio of the ad does not match the video player, Ooyala will letterbox the video ad (not stretch or crop it) to fit the video player.

Sample Aspect ratios

4:3

  • 512 x 384 pixels
  • 640 x 480 pixels
  • 1024 x 768 pixels

16:9

  • 512 x 288 pixels
  • 640 x 360 pixels
  • 1280 x 720 pixels
